Finishing a task is an important milestone, but it can hide waste. An agent may complete a game, a search or a software workflow while taking a long and fragile route. Once completion becomes common, an evaluation needs to ask how efficiently the system reaches the goal and what resources it used to find that route.

Patronus AI’s September 3 SpeedrunBench announcement describes ten retro and open-source games scored by frames required to reach a goal. It distinguishes online action selection from offline editing and replay of an action trace. Offline tests can begin with a reference run or from scratch. The authors report that a seed trajectory can help weaker systems complete a task while anchoring stronger systems to a slower route. Primary source.

The distinction has relevance beyond games. A demonstration may make a task understandable while discouraging exploration of a better strategy. That is an inference from the benchmark’s design, not evidence that the same effect has been measured in every business workflow.

An application evaluation could test that possibility by comparing a fixed agent with and without a worked example, under the same resource budget. The outcome should include completion, cost and unnecessary actions. A faster route that skips a required check is not a valid improvement.

Count the experiments behind the result

The announcement also reports that increasing available runs within an iteration can materially change performance. A model comparison therefore needs the search budget, not just the final trajectory. More attempts may produce a better route while consuming substantially more resources before the route is found.

For repeatable tasks, that up-front cost could be worthwhile if the improved procedure is reused. For one-off work, it may not be. An evaluation should state which situation it represents and distinguish discovery cost from execution cost.

The suite’s game settings provide controlled goal states and repeatable experiments, but they remain a limited proxy for real-world agent work. The next evidence is whether route improvements transfer to unseen tasks and remain valid when conditions change. SpeedrunBench offers a way to make efficiency and exploration visible after completion stops being a sufficient score.
